So you want to know what happened when I wore the same dress for seven days straight? Well, let me start off with the purpose behind why I've decided to ditch pants for twirly dresses this month! I'm participating in Dressember, a movement that uses fashion to advocate for women who've been exploited for their femininity (aka sex trafficking). Dressember, who is partnering with International Justice Mission and A21, is all about celebrating femininity while raising money to rescue women from this dark reality.
Guess what, nobody cares.
I'm guilty of thinking, "Ah, I can't wear this outfit today because I wore it last week and people will notice." Guess what, the longer I wore my Little Green Dress the more I realized that people didn't care! It wasn't until I told them that they took notice. Maybe people were actually thinking, "Ew, she's been wearing that dress for days," but hypothetical thoughts shouldn't stop you! Next time you want to re-wear an outfit or do something you think others might judge you for, DO IT! We tend to stop ourselves from doing things based on what other people may (or may not) be thinking.
"I've worn this dress for the past few days..."
Like I said, it wasn't until I pointed out that I've been wearing the same dress for days that I got a reaction. Two things I noticed:
- People's eyes slightly widened.
- They asked why.
Both were great avenues to share Dressember's mission! It was really cool to be able to talk about a topic that many of us rather pretend doesn't exist. Want to know something crazy? I even mentioned it in an interview I had last week! Sidenote: I got the internship, so they must've thought I wasn't that crazy! But this week was a cool way to use my vanity (what I was wearing) in a less superficial way.
Outer vanity< inner confidence
I keep on using the word 'vanity,' which is something that is definitely saturated in our culture. Why should we care about that? Well, I'll be the first to admit that I cared a lot about what people saw on me which spoiler alert my confidence suffered because of it. Doing that only let people see what I wanted them to see and not who I was passed the girl who wears nice clothes. Want to know what's actually cool and different? Being able to live passed what you look like, or what you have on, and instead let your personal characteristics and passions outshine any store-bought item. The more I surround myself with people who care about their beliefs and who they are, the more I realize what you wear shouldn't matter! Why? Because you want people to like you for who you are and not what you have on. I still, and will probably always, love dressing up but this time I'm letting who I am matter more than the clothes I'm in!
If you would like to help me reach my goal of raising $500 to go towards rescuing and aiding women who have been trapped in the sex trafficking system then please consider visiting my support page: http:// support.dressemberfoundatio n.org/amandarmartinez
